Military use of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

SEFCA offers solutions for the Defence sector that solve many of today’s issues associated with the increasing use of technology in demanding environments. As the need for communications increase so does the need for portable power. SEFCA addresses these demands through the use of small mobile refillable hydrogen fuel cells and transportable hydrogen power generators.

Today a soldier may need as much as 20 Watts for a typical field mission. As such, the soldier may have to carry as much as 27 lbs of rechargeable batteries for a 72 hour mission (or 18 pounds of non-rechargeable batteries). The power is needed to support computer, communications systems, GPS, remote sensing and video.

Hydrogen fuel cells now offer an option to carrying cumbersome heavy batteries. Hydrogen fuel cells can provide the equivalent power supply for as little as 8.8 lbs.

Key benefits of hydrogen fuel cells include:

  • They do not require access to grid power to be recharged
  • They can be refilled at the end of a mission reducing the need to throw away batteries that may only be half used
  • They display the remaining power/hydrogen left in the fuel cell
  • They are a quarter the weight of a normal battery
  • The volume of batteries needed is dramatically reduced

Additional to the small mobile fuel cells SEFCA also offers solutions for mobile back up power that can replace diesel power generation and provide up to 10 Kilowatts of power.

Corporate use of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

If you are a corporation looking to improve your green foot print or have specific power issues SEFCA can provide you solutions in two key areas. These are backup power and fork lift fuel cells.

Forklifts

A strong business case exists for the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells in place of existing battery forklifts. The strongest ROI occurs with large sites running multiple forklifts three shifts a day. Fuel cells can be easily fitted into Class II and III forklifts.

The advantages of Fuel cells over battery of LPG/Diesel forklifts are:

  • Where most companies need three batteries due to long recharge times and short run times only one fuel cell is required
  • The fuel cell does not need to be removed for changeover thereby increasing the operators productivity
The fuel cell can be used indoors or outdoors
  • Issues around disposal of poisonous lead and acid are removed
  • There is no longer a need to use non renewable, carbon producing fuels as the fuel.

Backup power

SEFCA provides hydrogen fuel cell solutions to corporations for backup power up to 60 Kilowats.

Hydrogen fuel cells are growing in popularity around the world to replace traditional diesel backup power.

The key advantages of hydrogen fuel cells solutions include:

  • Hydrogen fuel cells do not need to be fluted so can save considerable money when installing into high rise city offices
  • Hydrogen fuel cells have a 99.999 reliability rating and do not need to be continuously tested
  • Hydrogen fuel cells can be remotely monitored to show performance and fuel levels
  • Hydrogen fuel cells take up a very small foot print so can free up considerable data centre space when compared to batteries
  • Hydrogen fuel cells run off Hydrogen bottles that can be continuously replaced to provide virtually limitless back up
  • Through our association with Energy Response, SEFCA is able to change back up generation from a cost centre to a revenue centre
